Send My Sister to SchoolNo I'm not trying to offload members of your family, or mine, for that matter. But there was a promise made, back in 2000, that ALL children would at least get a primary education by 2015- you know, be able to read, and count, and write. Nothing we would consider major - but there are still 67 MILLION children who aren't even allowed those rights. This was a Millennium promise.. and we are WAAAYYYY short of meeting it. So each year, with my Lower School classes, I get involved in Send My Friend to School. And in 2011, that's focussed on girls. Because when a family has to pay for education directly, instead of through taxation as we do, then they tend to teach the boys, not the girls. More than half of that 67 million are female. And that's just wrong. So you'll be looking at videos and other resources in class, and working through some acitivities designed to help you realise that while you may hate going to class - these children would take your opportunities and make so much more of them. Because they know how valuable is an education... because they can't have one. Activity Sheets are HERE (people cutouts) and HERE (Mix and Match) And the Net links are http://www.sendmyfriend.org/ the main site http://www.sendmyfriend.org/take-action the first video http://www.sendmyfriend.org/teach/spotlight-on-africa the second video And if you can't see the posters, the link for those is http://www.sendmyfriend.org/teach/case-studies |
